🚀 6 Reasons You Shouldn’t Learn 3D Character Creation

Hey Reader,

Creating 3D characters in Blender isn’t for everyone.

To make characters truly feel believable is no easy task, and there are no shortcuts or hacks.

It requires studying anatomy, all the way to hair grooming. It's a craft-intensive and demanding journey for 3D artists to embark on.

Our very own Mastering 3D Characters course has grown into a deep dive into the entire process, now expanded to cover production-level workflow like texturing, shading, and hair grooming.

To take on the task of learning 3D character creation can be like standing on the edge of a high diving board, looking down at the water below. The jump is exciting, but it can also be a scary commitment to jump in.

In this email, we'll help you decide whether this is a plunge worth taking.

So if you are ready, let’s dive into the reasons you may not want to learn to master 3D characters.

We have a special offer running to celebrate the latest course update, Master 3D Characters is 20% off until May 7th 2026 - 23:59 CEST.

#1 3D Characters are Hard

Characters almost always look easier than they are.

If you’ve ever tried drawing a face, sculpting a hand, or clothing to feel right, you already know this. Even going for a more stylized look can quickly fall apart when the fundamentals aren’t there.

And the reason for this is simple. We spend our lives looking at people, and we’re constantly exposed to seeing characters in films, games, and media.

That familiarity is a double-edged sword: because we might feel we can recreate characters and faces from memory or intuition, but this same familiarity quickly lets us see how far off we are.

Mastering 3D characters requires a focused effort. This is why we teach this entire pipeline step by step. Having this deeper focus on understanding these processes and understanding how to use these skills will be an asset that goes beyond just creating 3D characters.

But it’s worth asking yourself:

Do I want to really dive deep into character creation right now? Or do I first focus on another skill, and work my way up to it later?

#2 What about Add-ons, Base Meshes, and “AI”?

There is no shortage of promises and shortcuts.

You can buy base meshes, use add-ons, try tools like MetaHumans, or generate characters with AI. The range of quality and styles is huge, and these tools exist for a reason. Creating characters has always been a strong need and a challenge.

If your goal is simply to have a character, that’s a valid path. Buying a model or using a generator will get you there faster. But it will not give you anything back in return as an artist, no new skills learned or growth.

But if you truly want to create your own hero character, something that captures attention and anchors a world, then you will need to understand the full process.

It takes time, but knowing how to build high-quality characters from scratch is a powerful, transformative experience for an artist.

Base meshes, generators, and AI can help in speeding up parts of the creation process. But to create a fully functional character that can lead a movie or video game, you need to learn to do things the “slow and long way”. And because few artists do this, it helps you stand out.

If you are serious about 3D characters, knowing the full pipeline is life-changing and a skill that remains rare, while others chase…

#3 Shortcuts and Trends

If you’re hoping that creating characters can be done with shortcuts, quick and easy solutions, and think you can compete with other character artists by chasing new, ever-changing trends, then this course likely isn’t for you.

Our course Mastering 3D Characters takes a different approach.

It’s about learning to take things on from the ground up. This means focusing on fundamentals, understanding established workflows, and building skills that hold up beyond a single project.

When you understand the fundamentals, you can have a complete picture of where to dedicate your time, where to speed up and simplify, and when to even break some of the rules.

Many beginners and aspiring artists fall prey to easy-looking shortcuts, shiny trends, and might think they can get away with skipping the fundamentals.

But moving from trend to trend, from one unfinished character to the next, will make you feel like you are stuck in a loop that is very hard to break. Making artists fall prey to shortcut chases and hollow promises.

Taking the time to go deeper to produce a solid character will help you break that vicious cycle. With this, you will have control over how to get over obstacles again and again.

Did you know that several people who ended up working at Pixar during its golden years came from diverse backgrounds after facing serious setbacks?

What they had in common was that no matter what they set out to do, they didn’t cut corners and learned the fundamentals of their trade to push on ahead.

#4 You’re a Complete 3D Beginner

To get the most out of Master 3D Characters, you should already feel somewhat comfortable inside Blender, especially with the interface and fundamental 3D concepts.

The course itself is more focused on the creation steps of characters than on covering Blender basics.

So if you are looking to create characters but are new to Blender, it would be best to first have a basic understanding of how the program works.

Luckily, we have something for that. We recommend beginning with our Blender Launch Pad course. This will give you a structured introduction to Blender and prepare you for more advanced work.

If you prefer an even more beginner-friendly option, why not have a look at our Free Blender Beginner’s course that covers the essentials that will bring you a lot closer to being ready to jump into character creation.

#5 You Want More Advanced, Cinematic-Looking Characters

Great! Then this is meant for you.

The hero character we build in the course actually looks deceptively simple at first. But that’s intentional. The focus isn’t on a single time-consuming result; it’s on teaching workflows that scale with each character you design.

The same principles we teach apply whether you’re creating a simple stylized character or something far more complex and cinematic.

The workflows learned in this course will apply to not just this character or even Blender; these workflows can be transferred to any character and even other 3D tools such as ZBrush for sculpting and Substance Painter for texturing. All the workflows follow the same approach and thought process.

Don’t just take our word for it, in the results shared by some of our students you’ll see this clearly. Students start with the same core process, but end up creating a wide range of characters in different styles, because they end up understanding the fundamentals of how the character creation process works.

So, if you are serious about mastering the craft of creating high-quality, believable 3D characters in Blender, our Master 3D Characters course (including the new update) is for you.

Hey Reader, Hair is one of those features that’s easy to overlook, but plays an important role in making a character feel truly real and alive. Character from Javier Benver “Wild Hair” By the time you reach character grooming, you’ve usually gone through sculpting, modeling, retopology, texturing & shading. Your initial energy and passion can start feeling low, and the temptation to rush your character's hair is real. But this is the very moment to slow down and lean in. Hair can be one of...

Hey Reader, Today I want to expand on the Master 3D Characters Part 3 update and specifically why we teach you to texture an entire character without leaving Blender. First, tools like Substance Painter are widely used for good reason, we are not agains it at all, it’s a industry standard powerful tool. But, it’s also valuable to stay in creative flow, inside one program like Blender. So you can move from sculpting, to modeling, to texturing, to lighting, without breaking your flow. That is...
