🥳 Birthday Sale Ends Soon + Gift Factory Challenge + Artist Spotlight

Hey Reader,

Today, we have a little interview with community member Rex Gonzalez, who shares how our courses and 3D Challenges helped him grow as an artist.

Plus, a quick reminder: Our Birthday Sale ends in just 1 week, and you still have 2 weeks to join our Gift Factory 3D Challenge!

But first, here’s Jarosław’s interview with Rex:

Hi Rex, great to have you in our community! Can you tell us a bit about yourself and how you got into 3D?

Hi, I’m Rex, and I’m glad to be part of this community. I first got into 3D through my love of drawing and design, and discovering Blender gave me a way to bring those ideas to life.

Over time, I’ve grown especially fond of sculpting stylized, cartoony characters, since they let me mix imagination with technical skills.

I’ve also enjoyed experimenting with turning digital sculpts into physical models, which makes the creative process even more exciting.

You’ve joined several of our challenges. What motivates you to take on these personal projects?

What drives me to complete challenges is that they keep me focused and give me a clear goal to work toward.

Since I spend a lot of time on commissions and other people’s projects, these challenges are a chance to create something personal just for myself.

They help me explore new ideas, experiment with techniques, and remind me why I fell in love with 3D art in the first place.

Looking at your projects, you seem to have an affinity for sculpting stylized cartoony characters. Where does this love come from?

My love for sculpting stylized, cartoony characters goes back to when I was a kid watching graffiti artists create amazing characters on walls.

Seeing how much personality and energy they could capture with bold shapes and colors really inspired me.

Over time, I wanted to bring my own characters to life, and 3D felt like the perfect medium to do that.

You’ve taken quite a few CG Boost courses. Which did you find most helpful, and which did you enjoy the most?

It’s hard to say which course has been the most helpful, because each one has taught me something new or reminded me of techniques I may have forgotten. But if I had to pick, I’d say Robotic Planet, I absolutely love Louis du Mont’s teaching style and the incredible knowledge he shares.

For me, it was a huge help in learning animation and figuring out how to get my characters moving. I had created a lot of static images before, and this course showed me how easy and rewarding it can be to bring them to life.

Oh, also honorable mention: the Master 3D Character course is amazing!

I loved how you added a flying kitten to the drone bot in Robotic Planet, putting your own spin on the exercise. What was your experience with this project, and what did you find most challenging?

That project was a really fun way to take what I learned in the course and add my own creative twist. It was definitely challenging, especially when it came to understanding the Graph Editor and Dope Sheet, since getting the timing and movement right took a lot of trial and error.

Even though it was tough, I enjoyed the process because each step taught me something new and pushed me to improve.

The community was also incredibly supportive, offering feedback and tips that helped me overcome those hurdles and made the whole experience even more rewarding.

Finally, is there a dream project you don’t feel ready for yet? What skills would you need to make it happen?

One of my dreams is to collaborate with others to create mini animated short stories that are high-quality, funny, sweet, and meant to bring smiles to people’s faces.

To make that happen, I’d need to find like-minded people, but I also know I need to improve my skills at rigging faces and emotions, as that’s what truly gives characters life.

I’ve been learning, but I don’t feel I’m quite at the level yet to make it look amazing. Efficient animation is also important, so I’ve been focusing on effective rigging and creating only what’s necessary to keep the process streamlined.

That’s awesome! I hope our community helps you bring that dream to life. Thanks for sharing your creative journey with us. Looking forward to seeing more of your work!

Thanks for the opportunity to share; I really appreciate it!

We hope Rex’s story inspires you to join our challenges, improve your 3D skills, and have fun along the way! It’s also a great chance to connect with fellow artists, share your work, and get feedback in our community.
