Alan here, I help manage CG Boost. We recently made a video called: Is it Still Worth Learning 3D Art? It’s a topic that’s been on our minds for a while, so the whole CG Boost team sat down together to talk honestly about it, from our own experiences, fears, and hopes for the future. If you haven’t seen it yet, you can watch it here: It turned into a more open and emotional conversation. And as expected, it sparked some pretty strong and thought-provoking comments on YouTube. So today, I want to follow up on some of the comments, and share a few thoughts that didn’t make it into the video. “Of course you say it’s still worth learning 3D art! You sell 3D courses, it’s your main source of income.”We got a few comments like that one. And to be honest, it’s a reasonable point. But. First, a lot of our team also works in the creative industry outside CG Boost. Personally, I spend part of my week working with Jared Owen’s channel, creating educational animations, while others on the team work in the VFX industry, clients or on personal projects. We practice what we preach. And honestly, if this were just about money, we’d be all over the AI hype train right now. But we’re not. Because even though it's tempting, deep down we know that hype fades, authentic creativity doesn’t. Change is uncomfortable...We’re all feeling a bit of unease. Every time I see another AI demo, I wonder where all this is heading. But to be honest, I have yet to be wowed or even remotely moved by it, I just feel emptiness and annoyance. But what I keep noticing is that truly inspiring art, the kind that sticks with you, is never easy or instant. It always takes time, thought, and often some sacrifice. New AI tech seems exciting because it promises speed and convenience. When I saw the new Sora 2 platform, I thought, this just makes remixes that have no lasting value. The results look impressive for a few seconds, but they fall apart just as quickly. Compare that to watching something like Arcane, or playing Elden Ring, or seeing the artistry in Expedition 33, the music, the atmosphere, the emotion behind every frame.
If you spend more than a few seconds watching it and turn on your brain, it is likely you'll feel that it was made by humans with passion and care. AI hasn’t even come 0.1% close to achieve something on those levels. It’s still mostly smoke and mirrors, great for generating quick demos, but not lasting meaning. It’s being used like cheap unhealthy junk food, it gives you the illusion of eating something of value, but leaves you with a stomach ache. I find myself looking at AI, mostly because of how scared some people are of it, they claim we’re all “cooked”. But then I feel immediately bored after a minute. When I go read an insightful book, create something for myself, watch an amazing movie or play a game with an incredible world, I feel something deep and enriching to my life. Until AI assists with the process of creating true, enriching art, I’m just not interested.Let everyone else chase short term rewards, in my experience that chase is never fulfilling and never ends, like trying to feel satisfied only eating popcorn. And learning 3D, 2D or other time proven arts gives you greater taste and control over the story and the art form. We live in a time when everything feels more fake and algorithmic, which makes real creativity, real human connections stand out even more. People are craving something that feels honest, hand-crafted, and personal. And that’s where 3D comes in. It’s not just a technical skill, it’s a storytelling language. It lets you turn your imagination into something tangible, emotional, and alive. Look at the current setting: Big studios are stuck in remakes and risk-avoidance. Disney’s chasing nostalgia, Hollywood’s lost their way chasing trends. That leaves a massive open space for small creators and passionate storytellers to do something fresh and meaningful. What kind of artists will thrive?I believe it’s the ones who stay focused on what lasts, who stay curious. Who adapt. Who focus on solving real problems and helping others tell great stories. If you only want a stable, predictable job, for example as a hard-surface modeler, I get that, but that would be risky. The people who last are the ones who love learning new things, and who keep their creative hunger alive. At CG Boost, when we meet artists like that, who combine skill with passion and curiosity, we can’t wait to work with them. That mindset is rare, and it’s what keeps this industry alive and inspires others. What will stay?Stories will stay. Emotion will stay. The need to connect through art, as long as there are people, that will always stay. That’s why we keep teaching 3D. Because we’ve seen how much impact it has on people, how it shapes culture, games, and entire generations of artists. Think about it: Finding Nemo, Toy Story, Jurassic Park, Cyberpunk 2077, Elden Ring, Astartes and more, these aren’t just ways to kill time. They’re proof that 3D can move people in ways no algorithm can. Until AI can create something with that kind of soul, I’ll happily keep believing in real artists. Maybe one day AI will help us get there. But right now, it’s being marketed to make cheaper, faster, shallower content. And that’s exactly why your creativity matters more than ever. To wrap this upI’m not saying 3D skills will never change, they will. But authentic storytelling and visual magic? Those will always matter. If you want a long-lasting creative career, focus on what makes people feel something. Use technology as a tool, not a replacement. Stop being so nihilistic and afraid, there is opportunity out there, as well as a lot of change. Because the world doesn’t need more content, it needs more creators who care, more of you. 👉 Check out our courses and our once in a year sale here Stay creative, ~Alan & the CG Boost Team |
