[Course Update] Master 3D Environments in Blender 🏔️🆙

Hey Reader,

Martin here,

It has been more than two years since I’ve released my Master 3D Environments in Blender course.

Ever since, over 7000 students decided to pick it up, and it received 70+ five start reviews.

Judging by the many comments and reactions, it still succeeds in teaching Blender users all the knowledge about environment creation I gathered over the years.

Still, the course had its flaws.

And sadly, most of those were present in the first workflow chapter, focusing on the creation of the “Lone mountain” scene.

Surrounded by a tranquil lake scenery and hills covered in trees, with pieces of fog floating through it, this scene has become the key artwork of the whole course.

In the chapter, I teach how to use the free A.N.T. landscape add-on to generate the mountain, how to then mix several materials together to texture it, and finally, how to add the water, the sky, the forests and the fog.

A really complex scene to kick off the whole course.

Unfortunately, some of the steps were either...

  • A bit complicated (shading of the mountain)
  • A little under explained (creation of the water and fog elements),
  • Or used outdated workflows (generating of the weight maps, and their conversion to vertex colors)

All of that is now fixed!

I have now managed to finally update the chapter, so it works without problem in the newest versions of Blender (3.5+), with none of the complications the previous version caused to the students.

What's awesome - I was actually helped by a lot of students, who added their notes to the comments section underneath each video.

Thanks to the feedback, I was able to pinpoint the biggest flaws of my workflow, and improve upon them. And in the process, I myself have learned so much!

The result is this update.

So, there is no better time than now, to jump into our Master 3D Environments course, and learn everything from mountain creation, to generating deserts, forests, mixing water types and clouds, and finally, making it all work in a final composited shot.

And if you own the course already, have fun with this free update.

Enjoy!

~Martin

Hey Reader, Zach here, The other day, in a CG Boost team meeting, we were discussing how platforms are oversaturated with content and images, which can make it feel like, what’s the point of making more content? Then Masha who has been on our team since the very beginning of CG Boost said: The reason I create art is to give life to my imagination. I like the process of thinking about an idea and fully bringing it to life. That encouraged me. Like a breath of fresh air, it was a great reminder...
